Space is the common denominator in many different movements and protests: Disused space, occupying common space, freedom to access and be in a space. Our access to space is diminishing at a point when the need for public space, to live, to create, to experiment has remained consistent. Being seen and being visible is also a vital part of protest and yet increasingly parts of the city are becoming private zones where protest cannot be exhibited. Drawing upon personal experience, these three artists, situated in differing strands of counterculture, discuss the ways in which their creativity has been shaped by alternative communities, the freedoms they allow and what they offer to the so-called mainstream.

Art of Resistance: The Final Frontier

A two day festival talks, workshops, art exhibitions and performances celebrating, honouring and inspiring decades of protest and creativity in Bristol. This contemporary festival focuses on how the arts are a vehicle for social change, drawing upon themes of reclaiming the body, the mind and the natural and built environment.

Resistance is never futile.
